It`s a given that we all love the Dead or we wouldn`t be here, but what other music floats your boat? I know this is a "focused forum" but I`m interested to know.
Neil Young
Coltrane
Hawkwind
Jazz Butcher
That`s me, how about you guys?

I like many of the bands folks have posted here especially Zappa (my all time favorite artist) but here are two musicians that get almost daily play at home:

ANDERS OSBORNE
LOUDON WAINWRIGHT III

Anders' live shows are wild with extended jams in every other song. He's from New Orleans (born in Sweden) and is very well known there but not on the national scene. 'Stoned, Drunk and Naked' is THE party song.
www.andersosborne.com

Loudon is older and you've all seen him before as he's also an actor. He's been around since the 60's and was the guitar playing guy on MASH. Recently he did the soundtrack for Knocked Up and also played the ob/gyn (am I married or what...) www.lwiii.com

Both of these guys are the kind of artists that you can really sink your teeth into with lots of albums, incredible songs and have that IT that makes you say 'wow, that song really speaks to me.'

I hope I’ve sparked a little interest in the guys, they truly deserve it. e.

I hear ya. Plus many of his songs are HILARIOUS. The Acid Song (especially the live version) is spot on and makes me laugh my ass off every time I hear it. "We went to Mary's house to listen to THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!!"

We've been fortunate to see him a bunch here in Denver. He even played a one-off show in this pit of a bar called the Lion's Den. We were literally three feet from him.

I'm really happy for him that the Knocked Up thing has put him back on the map. I just wish he'd tour with a band one more time. e.

It's been a while, so we're probably due for a review:

The Acid Song by Loudon Wainwright III

I had not taken acid for twelve years
But one night last summer I did
I was adrift in a bar room
Acting like a jerk and a kid

I knew we were asking for trouble
Trouble was what we would get
Five of us dropped in the girls' room
Psychedelicized insane quintet

Well that bathroom got crowded in no time
Our minds were all blown in one flash
Everyone in there got ugly
We exited out of there fast

Back in the bar we were happy
Feeling great, no problem
Back in the bar we were fine
Till Johnny turned into a Nazi
And Mary threw up all her wine

Well in no time we all were ejected
Soon we were out on the street
The sidewalk began to perspire
We had glass and dog shit at our feet

We went over to Mary's apartment
TO LISTEN TO THE GRATEFUL DEAD!
On the way there we lost Johnny
He had opted for Bellevue instead

"Well I'm really glad we did this, it feels great. Just like the old days, I love this.
I know my hair's on fire, it's like incense or something.
You know, your face is melting.
It is, it's all the colors of the rainbow
Hey you wanna hold some fruit?
C'mon, hold some fruit.
It breathes, it really does.
Have a cantaloupe, c'mon---
Ah, no, I dunno where the Ravi Shankar tape is . . . "

Well I had to get out of that city
Bobby was bringing me down
Me and my darling young Susie
Said so long and drove out of town

Driving on acid is easy!
Driving on acid's a breeze!
Just keep the car on the highway
Don't laugh and don't fart and don't sneeze

Oh we got to my house in the country
(in the country, man)
The trees were all throbbing and GREEN!
Susie was sure she had cancer
I was sure I was James Dean

We went down the lake to go swimming
(C'mon, let's try it out)
Down to the lake for a swim
Susie said "Water cures cancer."
I asked her to please call me Jim

Yes, acid is usually dangerous
The mild-mannered can quickly turn mean
LSD can surely derange us
Unless you possess Thorazine

So next time you wanna go out there
When you feel like fitting your head
Think twice before dropping acid
Hold out for mushrooms instead!

Yeah, it sure did! I must admit that "Whaddit I Done" is what REALLY had me hooked for life.

Now there's other bands like Battles (Warp Records) that have a similar sound but use rock instruments instead. Very driving. Very fun.

May as well add more to my favourites (this month, anyways):

And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead
Godspeed You Black Emperor
Stereolab
Joanna Newsom
Doves
Loscil
MF Doom
MC Paul Barman
U-Ziq
The Frogs
Sonic Youth
Blonde Redhead
Lime
Radiohead
O-Jays
Brass Construction

Sheeeit, the list is infinite, really.

Yeah, I think Sung Tongs on the whole (especially after seeing the fucked up Who Can Win A Rabbit? video) was what hooked me solid as well. Their early stuff like Spirit They're Gone/Danse Manatee is a real trip too.

Nice list/taste. I could go on and on as well, but I tried to limit myself to only stuff I've been listening to for the past week or so. I went and saw a gamelan concert last night with the friend-girl and am currently on the prowl for more. I wish I'd had the foresight to sneak in a pocket digital recorder to the show, as it was absolutely sublime.

I've never heard of gamelan before. THANKS! Looks like it's filled with intense percussion and melodic tones.

Gotta check if there are any events happening in my area here. Looks like I would enjoy it, as I'm very much into organic sounds like Japan's Kodo drums ( http://www.kodo.or.jp/frame.html ) and Africa's Konono No.1 ( http://www.crammed.be/konono/ ).

Here's a recording I found here of the Wesleyan University Gamelan Ensemble playing a while back:

The show I saw last night had members of that ensemble and was directed by the same Sumarsam I think.

Bow Wow Wow, oh hecks yeah. Annabelle, will my crush on you ever fade?

(No dude. No, it won't).

Woo-hoo! Mile High Club!

Seriously, fantastic stuff, Balinese-mohawken-Wonder-teen or no.

Adam and the Ants, brothers in the rap-ta-boonga tribal beat, no cymbals allowed, American Indians-are-go sound also did some great work.

On the darker side of the prairie, of course, you had Siouxsie Sioux, and Southern Death Cult wailing "Apache" (later to drop the "Southern," then the "Death," then become rock stars). What the hell was that fascination early-eighties post-punk Brits had for Native Americans? Was McLaren behind it all? Or does the fascination in fact stretch all the way back to those cloying, plaintive lads of mixed homeland,(shudder) AMERICA? (shudder shudder, spraying Lysol, must cleanse, fah "lonely people!" a fart upon "muskrat love!" begone sister golden shits! fa la la la la la la la la)!

I haven't heard anything; I do know Rufus is getting ready to play a Darfur benefit deal with Teddy, and this is off wikpedia (so it must be true).

Release the Stars
Rufus' fifth studio album Release the Stars was released by Geffen on May 15, 2007. The album was produced by Wainwright himself and featured Richard Thompson, Teddy Thompson, Martha Wainwright, Kate McGarrigle, Neil Tennant, Joan Wasser, Julianna Raye, Larry Mullins (professionally known as Toby Dammit), and Sian Phillips.[10] It reached number 2 in the UK, and debuted at number 23 in the USA. The first single of the album, Going to a Town was released on April 3, 2007 on the iTunes music store. Release the Stars was recently certified gold in the UK.

Great to hear man. Way to to take the hard path. Grokwise, I had been MIA for some time, and there was the usual small cast of characters-maybe wwd, sdh, waynecs. Everyone pulling for you. Now don't go losing that biting sarcastic edge on us, but if thats the price to paid I'm sure we can all deal with a kinder, gentler Wolf! Keep rockin!
